Overview

Shanghai Street in Melbourne’s bustling Little Bourke Street offers an authentic taste of Shanghainese cuisine. Specializing in rich, soulful dishes, this restaurant brings traditional flavors from Shanghai’s vibrant streets straight to your plate, making it a go-to spot for dumpling aficionados and lovers of nuanced Chinese fare.

The heart of Shanghai Street lies in its home-made steamed Shanghai Xiaolongbao, which are delicate, soupy parcels that have garnered high praise for their freshness and skillful preparation. Alongside these, the pan-fried pork dumplings provide a satisfying contrast with their crispy bases and juicy fillings. Notably, their Shanghainese-style marinated duck and the rich braised pork belly with Chinese steamed bread stand out as emblematic dishes, capturing the essence of comfort food with traditional techniques.

Seafood offerings such as fried barramundi with pine nuts and the stir-fried king prawn with ginger and spring onion add variety and reflect the breadth of the menu. The restaurant’s inclusion of house special beverages like lemon iced tea and lychee soda enhances the dining experience, refreshing and complementing the flavors without overwhelming the palate.

Located in a compact space that resembles a cozy, bustling hole-in-the-wall, Shanghai Street is alive with energy, especially during peak hours. The ambiance might not cater to those seeking a polished, fine-dining environment—but it perfectly suits diners prioritizing quality and authenticity over aesthetics. Tables and chairs show signs of wear, giving the space a lived-in character that pairs well with the straightforward, no-nonsense service. The team operates with impressive efficiency, managing strong demand with focus rather than chitchat.

This place attracts a diverse crowd—from solo diners eager to sample a variety of dumplings to groups chasing hearty portions of classic dishes. While some suggest smaller portion options could improve the experience for individuals wanting to explore more menu items, the generous servings have kept many fully satisfied. Fans of bold and hearty flavors will appreciate staples like the kung pao chicken and spicy chilli oil noodle soup, while those seeking comfort in rice and noodle dishes will find plenty to enjoy.

Customer feedback highlights the impressive dumplings and the welcoming yet brisk service, though some dishes like smoked salmon fried rice and the fried whole chicken have drawn mixed reactions. Overall, the vibrant flavors and commitment to Shanghainese culinary tradition make Shanghai Street a valuable addition to Melbourne’s Chinatown dining scene.

If you crave authentic Chinese eats that embrace texture and flavor, especially expertly crafted dumplings and rich, braised meats, Shanghai Street delivers. Come prepared for a lively atmosphere, efficient service, and deeply satisfying dishes that reward those willing to look past the modest surroundings.

Great food , friendly service ! Would be great if there were smaller portions for the dumplings available so a single diner can try more options . Food was still delicious , wish I had the belly to try other dishes !

I was so excited to try this spot after many months of walking past and seeing a regular queue. Was craving dumplings on the day and was not disappointed! Wouldnt recommend ordering pork dumplings and pork xia long bao in one order, they just tasted the same. Get one or the other, or try a different meat/flavour if you want to get both. Dumplings/xiao long bao: 4.7/5 Biggest disappointment was the signature fried “whole” chicken. It was SMALL. Smallest whole chicken ive ever seen. Literally wouldve been about the size or just under the portion of a half chicken meal elsewhere. Wouldnt recommend: 2/5 flavour was okay Smoked salmon fried rice 3/5, tasty but was hard to pair with anything because the smoked salmon had a strong taste. If having by itself, would be good Service 3/5: we asked for spoon and fork twice but they forgot both times. Otherwise food service time and arrival was okay Would probably come back to give it another try

We went on a Sunday evening around 5:30 and waited about 10 minutes to get in. While waiting, they gave us the menu and an order sheet, so by the time we sat down, the food came out almost immediately. The wontons in chili oil and peanut and sesame butter sauce were lighter than I expected—the peanut flavor was quite subtle, with a slight tanginess that wasn’t quite what I had in mind. But I absolutely enjoyed the Shanghai fried noodles. I’d definitely come back to try more of their famous dumplings

This is my second visit, serves the best dumplings I have ever had. There is usually a line out front. Arrived at about 640pm on a Wednesday. Had about 5 to 10min wait. In the queue you get a menu and can pre-order. My last trip was with a large group and the peanut satay dumplings are a must. Tonight I went solo. Ordered #5 pan fried pork buns, #80 stir fried vegetables jasmine tea. About $43 all up. Both dishes were absolutely awesome. I put my leftovers into a 50cent container and left full. Staff are very efficient and very busy. Don't expect a friendly, overly helpful, talkative group. Expect a team working crazy hard to keep up with the demand. The space is a bit like a hole in the wall. It's a little dirty in the corners. The chairs are a bit old, the leather material on the chairs is a bit ripped. The tables are a bit old. But... the food is that good, it just doesn't matter. I fully understand why they are so busy and so excited to go again.
